Here is a great email from Vic Olson, click on any image to enlarge
enclosed find pictures of the Barr & Stroud V-twin, 1000 cc engine, as I said in my last e-mail, the engine is new! never run. I found it at antique shop where it was being used as a door stop. The engine was seized when I got it but was able to free it up in a couple of hours. The biggest problem was the mouse nest in the front cylinder. As a result of that, a new sleeve would have to be made if it were to run because of pitting caused by the mouse piss!
All other parts are perfect. The carburator is not correct, it is one I had lying around and it looks good. It should be a Brown and Barlow. The compression release mechanism is also not there, hence the dual sparking plugs. I have a drawing of the mechanism and may make it some day. The other pictures are of my 1923 Grindlay Peerless with a 350cc. Barr & Stroud sleeve valve engine last registered in 1953 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It runs well but it is the worst handling motorcycle I have ever ridden so I don't use it much. From what I understand, Barr & Stroud is the parent company of what is now Pilkington Optronics which is still in Glasgow.
