My
thanks again to Leon Mitchell from Australia, he has identified the outfits shown in this photograph. The front bike looks to be an OHV BSA Sloper. From the position of the toolbox on the lower rear chainstay, I'd say c1929. In 1930, the toolbox was bigger, spanning the gap between the stays.(date on back of photo 1932) The rear bike is most interesting. It is definitely the (rare) S3 AJS, introduced in 1931. It was a 496cc transverse SV twin, with in-line gearbox, but bevel drive to chain final transmission. Here is an enlargement of the A.J.S. |

| Taken in 1932, this shows the Rossleigh showroom with 3 side car outfits sitting on the cobbled roadway. At this time most roads in Edinburgh were cobbled with tramcar lines running up the centre, very dangerous for Motorcycles when wet. Dad once had a bad accident , fracturing his skull, when he came off in the rain in the middle of Edinburgh. | |||||||
