A REAL MOTORCYCLE FOR THE ENTHUSIAST.

.

This is a Photograph taken in 1928 of George Brough at Arpajon
when he recorded the speed of 130.6 M.P.H. on an SS100, then
the fastest speed in the world on a solo motorcycle.
He also won more than 250 Challenge cups and Gold medals in
races between 1919 / 1939.
How many other Manufacturers can claim to have done that on
one of their own machines ?

There are very few people who are lucky enough to be able to say that they have ridden a Brough-Superior, let alone an SS100 fitted with the glorious 1000cc J.A.P. engine. This was the machine that was used on the road by enthusiasts, and also the one that held the Maximum World Speed record for solo and side-car motorcycles covering the period from 1924 to 1937 Solo, and 1924 to 1937 Side-car.
The fastest Brough was in 1960 when R.Berry did 186 M.P.H. at Pendine sands. (not officially confirmed)

Our SS 100
My Father, Jimmy Watson, sold Brough-Superiors when they were new, at Rossleigh in Edinburgh where he was manager of the Motorcycle Showroom. The Photo shows him on a very early 1920's Brough SS 80. This is the oldest photo we have of Dad on a Brough. Dad knew George Brough from his visits to the factory.
Dad with SS 80 around 1920
The next photo shows him in about 1961 with his SS100 Brough - Superior. The remarkable thing about this bike was the fact that Dad sold when it was new in 1936, and bought it back in 1960 from the original owner ! We already had an SS80 at home, but this was something special.
This Brough is now in the Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham. I have great memories of riding this SS100, no other bike has since given me so much a kick.
Talking about kicks, ... have you ever tried to kick start a BSA 350cc Gold Star Clubmans in race trim ? Easiest way to get into space !!

New entry
for 1926 Brough-Superior 5-15, can you HELP ?
Probably the most famous Brough Owner was Colonel T.E. Lawrence better known as 'Lawrence of Arabia'. In his lifetime he owned no fewer than 7, one SS80 and six SS100 's, doing almost 300,000 miles on them. He was a very methodical person, keeping a full record of them all. He wrote several letters on the joys of riding Brough-Superiors.
Ready to GO !!

If you have any Photographs of either Brough-Superior or Scott
Motorcycles, I would be delighted to add them to this site on a
Special page, just e-mail them with the details.
