This was the
first 2 seater Cooper ever built as far as I know.
It was built with a 500cc. Triumph Twin Motorcycle engine, which was not a
success due to excessive engine
vibration . The chassis was made by using two Fiat 500 chassis end to end,
and the body was a work of art, all
alloy hand beaten.
The complete body was hinged at the front, you just lifted one clip, which
you can see at the extreme centre
rear of the body.Cooper Cars sold it on as they could not cure the engine
vibration, or get performance.
When I bought the car the engine
had been changed to a tuned Jowett flat twin in an attempt to sort it out.
I
also got a spare set of Racing tyres and alloy wheels with it. The engine
was behind the driver and due to the
whole body lifting accessibility was great! The Chassis had been lengthened
to accommodate this engine, but
the main problem was that would not perform.
I did not keep
it long, and regretted selling my Morgan to get it. I understand it has now
been restored to it's former glory, back to a Triumph engine and the chassis
and body back to the proper size!
If the current owner ever see's this , get in touch, and I can give you the
history of the car prior to me buying it. |
